Dr. Trauttmansdorff studied law at the University of Graz, where he continued to work as a university assistant for international law and international relations from 1977 to 1979. He later studied European Studies in Bruges (Belgium). From 1980 to 2015, he served in the Austrian Foreign Service, with postings in Geneva, Bucharest, Washington, D.C., Budapest, and as Ambassador in Cairo, Khartoum, Lisbon, and Prague, as well as in a senior position at the International Law Office. From 2015 to 2020, he held the Chair of Diplomacy at Andrássy University Budapest. Ferdinand Trauttmansdorff was actively involved in remembrance work and combating anti-Semitism, including as Chairman of the Task Force for International Co-operation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (2008-2009) and on the Committee of the Austrian National Fund for Victims of National Socialism. He has received numerous state medals and awards for his work, including from the Holy See, Austria including Lower Austria, Portugal and the Czech Republic (e.g. Řád bílého lva [The Order of the White Lion]).
