Studied law at the University of Graz, then university assistant for international law and international relations; European studies in Bruges (Belgium, 1977-7889). From 1980-2015, he worked in the Austrian Foreign Service, including in Geneva, Bucharest, Washington D.C., Budapest and as Ambassador in Cairo, Khartoum, Lisbon and Prague, as well as in a senior position in the International Law Office. From 2015-2020, he took over the Chair of Diplomacy at Andrassy University in Budapest. Ferdinand Trauttmansdorff was actively involved in remembrance work and combating anti-Semitism, including as Chairman of the Task Force for International Co-operation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (2008-2009) and on the Committee of the Austrian National Fund for Victims of National Socialism. He has received numerous state medals and awards for his work, including from the Holy See, Austria including Lower Austria, Portugal and the Czech Republic (e.g. Řád bílého lva).
