Autumn 1989: Alois Nebel lives in a remote little town called Bílý Potok near the Czechoslovak-Polish border. The loner works as a train dispatcher at the local train station and in his spare time he is passionate about collecting old timetables. However, as soon as fog rolls in over the station, Alois begins to hallucinate and sees ghosts and shadows from Europe's dark past rushing past him on trains, victims of the Second World War and the Soviet occupation, who haunt him time and again. When the situation does not improve for Alois, he is committed to a mental hospital, where he meets the "mute". He was imprisoned for trying to cross the border. The encounter with the "mute" prompts Alois to confront his demons and no longer accept that he is haunted by ghosts and visions every night. And gradually the nightmarish fog of the past clears for the train dispatcher.
