Autumn 1989: Alois Nebel lives in a remote small town called Bílý Potok near the Czechoslovak-Polish border. A loner, he works as a train dispatcher at the local station and is passionate about collecting old timetables in his spare time. However, whenever fog rolls in over the station, Alois begins to hallucinate and sees ghosts and shadows from Europe’s dark past rushing past him on trains — victims of the Second World War and the Soviet occupation who haunt him repeatedly. When his condition worsens, Alois is committed to a mental hospital, where he meets the “Mute”. He was imprisoned for attempting to cross the border. The encounter with the "Mute" prompts Alois to confront his demons and no longer accept that he is haunted by ghosts and visions every night. Gradually, the nightmarish fog of the past begins to clear for the train dispatcher.
